Solar Energy

Unlike natural gas or coal, solar energy is clean and energy-efficient. The process of burning natural gas or coal produces carbon dioxide, whereas the conversion of sunlight into electricity does not release any pollutants into the atmosphere.
Moreover, solar panels reduce the costs of energy and by investing in the purchase of solar panels we contribute to the research and development of sustainable energy. That is why Far West is equipping all its new developments with solar panels. Besides this, many existing houses in the districts of Overtoomse veld and Geuzenveld — two of the larger districts in Amsterdam Nieuw West — are now fitted with solar panels on their roofs: in the Mondriaanstraat (in Overtoomse veld), 192 households were connected to 500 m2 of solar panels in 2007. The surface area has been expanded by 2,700 m2 in 2008/2009.

The installation of solar panels has been made possible with the mediation of Senternovem, the Dutch Bureau of Innovation and Sustainability, and through grants of the Dutch Stimulation Scheme Sustainable Energy — Stimuleringsregeling Duurzame Energie (SDE) — of the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
